Jan 21, A. Audie Murphy? But I soon forgot both the heat and the labor? Well, whatever comes.
Before us lies a railroad track along which the machine-gun crew has dug in. Now I have shed my first blood. My weight did not measure up to Leatherneck standards. His actions on the ground impressed his superior officers and they quickly promoted him abck corporal.I have always admired Audie Murphy. Murphy is incredibly humble and even goes so far as to credit one of his fellow soldiers for a poem he apparently wrote. And it is chillingly reminiscent as they meet continued fierce resistance by a desperate enemy retreating from France toward Germany. After the death of my mother, I was more than ever determined to enter military service.

Gallantry has been glorified more dramatically on film previously but Mr. Murphy, who still seems to be the shy, serious tenderfoot rather than a titan among G. As Gen. Walter Bedell Smith, who appears in the prologue, points out, "To Hell and Back" is both the story of the rare few who risked their lives above and beyond the call of duty and that of the foot soldier as seen through the eyes of one of these dogfaces. If Audie Murphy's memoirs of his impoverished youth on a Texas farm seem slightly theatrical, most of the ensuing views of the callow, terrified enlistee who became America's most decorated campaigner echo with the ring of conviction. Although Technicolor and CinemaScope enhance the battle vistas, the intervals between seem dull not because of the absence of gunfire but because of unimaginative handling of dialogue and situations.

The company commander finally calls me on the carpet. His descriptions of getting caught in ambushes and seeing his friends blown to pieces - and his characterizations were so convincing that it was like seeing my friends blown to pieces. I am conscious only that the smoke and the turret afford a good screen, for the first time in three da. I could not do so with this book.
